About tnotes

Who makes tnotes, why it exists, how it is licensed and funded, and how to get in touch: GitHub issues and discussions, no email list, no company.

What it is

tnotes is a terminal application for Markdown notes. Notes are plain .md files in folders you choose; #tags and [[links]] are parsed from the text. It has a mouse-capable TUI for writing and a headless CLI that prints JSON, so scripts and AI agents can read and write the same files while the TUI is open. Current version: 1.3.0, released 2026-09-21. See the changelog.

Who makes it

tnotes is written and maintained by , one person, in Rust. It started as a personal tool: a way to keep Obsidian-style linked notes without leaving a terminal or an SSH session, and to let coding agents append to those notes without a plugin or a server. There is no company behind it and no plan to make one.

License and funding

The source is MIT-licensed at github.com/0x1ocean/tnotes. There is no paid tier, no telemetry, no account. The vendored editor component is edtui (MIT) with a word-wrap patch, published as edtui-tnotes on crates.io. Development is unfunded.

This website

tnotes.app is a static site built with Astro from the site/ directory of the same repository, hosted on Vercel. Every page has a Markdown twin (send Accept: text/markdown or append .md), and the whole site is in llms.txt and llms-full.txt. Comparison pages state the date their facts were checked and link their sources. See the privacy note.
